This tank top is knit flat in two pieces, then seamed using mattress stitch. After seaming the two sides, the i-cord straps are knit in one long i-cord piece which is then joined end to end via mattress stitch, forming a single loop. The loop is then applied or seamed to the front and back necklines to finish the halter.
The stitch pattern involves a heavy use of knits and purls, creating an extremely stretchy garment. If you would like a longer top, feel free to continue to add length at front and back. Because of the rib texture in the middle of the piece paired with the garter at the sides, the middle of the front and back hemline fall lower than the sides. The length given by the schematic is the length for the middle of the hem.
This project has a massive amount of negative ease because it is so stretchy. Unstretched, my sample is 24.5” around at bust, and my actual bust size is somewhere between 36”-38” depending if I’m wearing a bra that day. When choosing a size, note that this ease is factored into the pattern, such that if you have a bust size of 44”, you should knit the size 44”, which will have 12 inches of negative ease factored in. Every size has the same amount of ease factored in so we can all get a similar fit regardless of size.
Size 3 US needles, circular or straight
Size 4 US double-pointed needles (two needles)
1 Removable stitch marker
2 Regular or removeable stitch markers
Tapestry needle
Scissors
4 inches / 10 cm = 28 sts and 36 rows
The swatch is knit in a simplified but comparable stitch pattern to the allover texture, using size 3 US needles.
CO 32 sts.
Row 1 (WS) : GSS, p5, k2, p5, k4, p5, k2, p5, GSS.
Row 2 (RS) : GSS, k5, p2, k5, p4, k5, p2, k5, GSS.
Rep these two rows until swatch measures at least 4” from cast-on edge.
Measure without washing or blocking. Measure 4” across and count stitches, and measure 4” from cast-on edge to end and measure 4 inches. If the number of stitches and rows in 4” does is less than gauge as noted above, try with larger needles, or if the number of stitches is less than desired, try smaller needles.
This design challenges knitters to create a palette using four colors. Feel free to dig into stash or shop around for your perfect four.
